MLB Auctions’ Gehrig Day Cards for ALS Research

More than 80 years after his passing, the spirit of baseball icon Lou Gehrig still resonates, bringing fans together to honor his legacy. To mark Lou Gehrig Day, MLB Auctions introduces a special fundraising initiative in partnership with the Sean M. Healey & AMG Center for ALS, dedicated to advancing research and treatment for the disease synonymous with Gehrig.

Commencing on June 2, fans are invited to participate in an auction featuring exclusive Gehrig Day baseball cards. Each card represents a Major League Baseball team and showcases a player selected by MLB writer and ALS advocate Sarah Langs. The event pays tribute to Langs, who is battling ALS, and will be honored by the Phillies during Lou Gehrig Day at Citizens Bank Park.

The selection of players for these unique cards holds significance, whether through statistical connections to Gehrig, support for the ALS community, or a profound love for the game. In addition to these one-of-a-kind baseball cards, the auction offers a remarkable opportunity courtesy of Mastercard—an unparalleled “Priceless New York Yankees” experience.

ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive ailment affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, resulting in muscle weakness and degeneration. With approximately 30,000 sufferers in the U.S. and 500,000 worldwide, ALS spares no demographic and currently lacks a cure.

Engaging in this auction allows fans to directly contribute to initiatives focused on improving treatments and enhancing the lives of ALS patients. It underscores the community’s ability to unite beyond baseball for a cause that transcends the sport, emphasizing the collective impact of dedicated supporters.

The Gehrig Day cards feature renowned players such as Mike Trout representing the Angels, Yordan Alvarez for the Astros, and Shohei Ohtani for the Dodgers, among others. Each card symbolizes a connection between baseball’s storied past and the ongoing battle against ALS, imparting significance not just as collectibles but as instruments influencing a critical health crusade.
