Michael Jordan’s Logoman Card Sells for $2.9 Million

In the thrilling world of sports memorabilia, a 2003 Upper Deck Ultimate Logos autograph card of the basketball legend Michael Jordan achieved a jaw-dropping sale price of over $2.9 million at a Goldin Auctions event, setting a new record for the highest-selling Michael Jordan card. The card, boasting a 1/1 designation and adorned with a game-used NBA “Logoman” patch, combined with Jordan’s signature in distinctive blue ink, captured the hearts of avid collectors and enthusiasts alike.

The journey towards this astounding sale commenced with a humble opening bid of $200,000 on April 19. As the auction progressed, the unique attributes of the card attracted significant attention, resulting in a fierce bidding war among 38 participants. Eventually, the card was sold for an impressive $2.4 million, affirming its status as a prized possession within the realm of sports collectibles. Authenticated and graded by PSA, the card not only received an ‘Authentic’ rating but also a perfect 10 for the signature, underscoring its impeccable condition and unparalleled rarity in the market.

This remarkable achievement not only surpassed the previous record sale of $2.7 million for a 1997-98 Upper Deck Game-Used Jersey Jordan card but also accentuated the enduring allure and substantial worth of Michael Jordan-related memorabilia. The preceding record-holder featured a segment of Jordan’s jersey from the 1992 All-Star Game, marking one of the early instances of jersey cards in sports card packs.

Even in retirement, Michael Jordan continues to reign supreme in the realm of sports collectibles. From the most expensive sports jersey ever sold—an iconic 1998 NBA Finals jersey securing $10.1 million—to this latest groundbreaking card sale, Jordan’s legacy and market value remain unparalleled, captivating fans and collectors worldwide.

The Goldin ‘Elite 100’ auction not only showcased the exceptional sale of the Michael Jordan Logoman card but also featured an array of prestigious sports memorabilia. Additional highlights from the event included two other noteworthy Jordan cards—an 1986-87 Fleer rookie card and a 1997-98 Skybox Precious Metal Gems Red card—selling for significant amounts, demonstrating the robust market and enduring interest in rare Jordan collectibles.

Furthermore, the auction presented a diverse collection of sports memorabilia, ranging from a rare 1890-92 John Ryder Studio Cy Young cabinet card to high-value items like Babe Ruth’s 1933 Goudey card and a unique 2017 Panini Flawless Symbolic Signatures card of Patrick Mahomes. Each item encapsulated a piece of sports history, resonating with enthusiasts and collectors alike.

One poignant moment of the auction was the sale of Kobe Bryant’s jersey worn during the poignant game where he persevered through injury to make his free throws. The jersey, autographed by Bryant, fetched over $1.2 million, reflecting the emotional and historical significance embedded in sports memorabilia.

Among the captivating items on display were Michael Jordan’s Nike shoes from the notable 1985 exhibition game in Italy, where he shattered a backboard. The shoes, still containing a fragment of glass in the sole, commanded a price of $413,580, serving as a tangible reminder of Jordan’s indelible mark on basketball history.

The auction also featured a Mickey Mantle game-used jersey from 1957, which sold for $457,500, highlighting the enduring legacy and admiration for sports legends across different eras. In essence, the event not only underscored the luxurious and investment-worthy nature of sports memorabilia but also celebrated the rich history and impact of these esteemed sports icons through the artifacts they once donned or utilized.
