REA’s February Auction Sets Records with Vintage Sports Card Sales

Robert Edward Auctions (REA) hit a home run with their recently concluded February auction, raking in an impressive total of over $1.2 million in sales. The star of the show was undoubtedly the PSA 5 graded M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card, which fetched a staggering $75,000, setting a new record for its version and showcasing the intense demand for rare vintage sports cards among collectors.

In addition to the Wagner card, another notable sale came from a Ty Cobb Blue Background card from the same M116 Sporting Life series. Graded PSA GOOD 2, this card made waves by breaking the record for its condition with a sale price of $15,000. The auction drew the attention of both registry builders and avid collectors, especially with the inclusion of ten Mint 9 graded cards from the iconic 196 Topps set. Among these, the #2 Roman Mejias PSA MINT 9 card stole the spotlight by fetching an impressive $19,200, marking the highest price for a non-Hall of Famer from this particular set in its grade.

The auction featured a diverse array of 2,732 items, ranging from vintage cards to memorabilia. Some other top-selling items included a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background graded PSA VG-EX 4, which sold for $21,000, a 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig graded PSA EX-MT 6, which went for $18,000, and a 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball PSA NM-MT 8 Complete Set, closing at $12,000, among several other impressive sales.

Brian Dwyer, the President of REA, expressed his delight at the auction’s widespread appeal and the enthusiastic participation from the collector community. He also hinted at exciting prospects for REA’s upcoming events, including the March Encore event scheduled for March 14-24 and the Spring Catalog Auction kicking off on April 5. This signals a vibrant future for the hobby and offers promising opportunities for collectors and enthusiasts alike to engage with the sports collectibles market.

The success of REA’s February auction not only reaffirms the evergreen popularity and value of vintage sports cards and memorabilia but also sets the stage for more thrilling events to come. As REA continues to cement its position as a premier platform for sports collectibles, the anticipation for future auctions remains high, promising a treasure trove of excitement for all those passionate about the world of sports memorabilia.
