Topps’ Exclusive Deal with Shohei Ohtani

In a groundbreaking move that is poised to excite collectors and sports aficionados globally, Topps, a division of Fanatics Collectibles, has unveiled an exclusive long-term global trading card agreement with the two-time MVP Shohei Ohtani. This partnership, effective immediately, guarantees a range of distinctive collectibles, including autographed cards, game-used memorabilia, and cards commemorating significant moments from Ohtani’s illustrious career.

The deal encompasses both the United States and Japan, acknowledging the surging interest in trading cards in both markets. Particularly, Japan symbolizes a rapidly expanding sector for the hobby and the Topps brand. Introducing products tailored to Japanese collectors, Topps is aiming to fortify its international presence and cater to a broader fan base.

“I’m thrilled to be exclusively collaborating with Topps to offer fans unique cards and collectibles for seasons to come,” expressed Ohtani. The Los Angeles Angels’ standout player joins a prestigious roster of Japanese players affiliated with Topps, such as Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Ichiro Suzuki, and Hideki Matsui.

David Leiner, President of Trading Cards at Fanatics Collectibles, conveyed his excitement for the partnership. “Today marks a monumental moment in our brand’s history,” Leiner remarked. “Our partnership with Shohei isn’t just business — we are avid fans, admiring both his on-field performance and his representation of the game off the field.”

Leiner emphasized that the exclusive agreement would enable Topps to innovate to unprecedented levels. “With this fresh, exclusive deal, Topps will maintain its momentum in providing innovative offerings with him, offering collectors products unlike anything seen before in the hobby, while bringing them closer to this exceptional player,” he added.

Building upon Topps’ previous non-exclusive relationship with Ohtani that commenced in January 2018, the new exclusive agreement signifies a deepened dedication to showcasing Ohtani’s skills and granting fans unparalleled access to exclusive memorabilia.

This announcement comes on the heels of Fanatics Collectibles’ inking of a long-term exclusive trading card deal with NBA superstar LeBron James earlier this year. Including Ohtani reinforces Fanatics’ strategy of aligning with influential athletes to offer distinctive and highly sought-after collectibles.

Expanding Global Reach

The inclusion of Japan-based products strategically acknowledges the substantial growth of the trading card market in Japan. By presenting region-specific collectibles, Topps aims to interact directly with Ohtani’s vast fan base in his homeland.

A Win for Collectors

Collectors can anticipate a diverse range of new offerings resulting from this exclusive deal. From limited-edition autographed cards to memorabilia featuring game-used equipment, the partnership assures the delivery of items that will become focal points in any collection.

Shohei Ohtani has mesmerized the baseball world with his dual talents as both a pitcher and a hitter, clinching two MVP awards and international recognition. His unique skill set and humble demeanor have made him a global ambassador for the sport.
