Heritage Icons Photography Auction Unveils Rare Autographed Images

Heritage Auctions has recently unveiled a remarkable selection of autographed photographs in its latest Icons Photography Auction, catering to both photography and sports memorabilia enthusiasts alike. Among the standout items up for grabs is a captivating 1948 photo featuring basketball legend George Mikan, which mirrors his iconic 1948 Bowman rookie card. The 8×10 Type 1 photo, showcasing Mikan in action, is enhanced with his signature in striking blue ink and is anticipated to command a price upwards of $20,000.

The theme of signed vintage photos continues to be a focal point of the auction, with a late 1940s photograph of Cleveland Browns’ icon Otto Graham making an appearance. This photo mirrors the image on Graham’s 1950 Bowman Football rookie card, complete with his signature, adding to its allure. Similarly, a signed photo of Jackie Robinson from 1949 captures the moment he received his Silver Bat for clinching the National League batting title—a year in which he was also crowned MVP. This significant Type I photo, personalized to “Jeff,” is sure to attract attention.

Adding to the collection is another poignant image of Robinson from 1957 as he bids farewell to his playing days by clearing out his locker at Ebbets Field. The photo offers a glimpse of his Dodgers cap, home jersey, fielder’s glove, cleats, equipment bag, and two bats, one of which belonged to Gil Hodges. This piece is projected to command bids exceeding $10,000.

Furthermore, the auction showcases a unique photograph believed to have been used for Willie Mays’ 1952 Topps card, featuring Mays’ signature on the front—a rare find that is thought to have been signed in the 1990s.

With an impressive online catalog boasting over 150 vintage images, some dating back more than a century, the auction offers a diverse selection for discerning collectors. Notable highlights include a snapshot from the 1919 World Series capturing Black Sox pitcher Eddie Cicotte and Reds’ starter Dutch Reuther shaking hands before a fateful game at Redland Field in Cincinnati. This historic image, complete with its original paper caption and stamps on the back, is expected to kick off bidding at $8,000.

Additionally, the auction features rookie photos of sports legends such as Hank Aaron (1954), Jack Nicklaus (1962), and Pete Maravich (1970), along with various striking images of iconic figures like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and other pre-war sports heroes.

Running until June 13, the auction provides a compelling opportunity for collectors and sports history enthusiasts to own a unique piece of athletic heritage. With a rich assortment of sports history immortalized through photography, this event promises to be a treasure trove for those seeking to capture a slice of sporting greatness.
